Payment Deadlines
We use Wetravel for payments. Paying by electronic check is free; credit card payments include a processing fee (shown at checkout). The lowest-fee option is entering your checking account details (1% fee). You can also mail a check to Adventures For Solo Travelers (include trip and country name), then text a photo of it to 770-432-8225 for fee-free processing.

Before You Go
Read the updated “Heading Abroad with AFS” guide, especially if you’re new.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the trip ends, with two blank visa pages. Take a photo or make a copy and store it in the cloud.
Download the Mobile Passport app for faster customs clearance.
Notify your bank and credit card companies of travel dates.
Double-check airline rules on their website; policies vary.
Fitness Level Expect moderate daily walks and activities. Know your limits—AFS trips are active and involve a lot of walking. If you’re unsure, choose an itinerary that matches your ability so you can enjoy the trip fully and not slow down the group.
Flight Information Airlines sometimes change routes. Download your airline’s app to manage your booking, track bags, and get updates. If you have issues, use the app or contact the airline online. Premium credit cards may offer travel perks and insurance—see www.tpg.com for recommendations.

Airport Transfers One group pick-up is planned for December 6 at airport if flight times are similar. Otherwise, use a taxi, Uber, Bolt, or the airport express train. Coordinate with others in the Facebook group if you want to share transfer costs. If you arrive early, you’re responsible for moving rooms if needed.
Group Meet-Up We’ll meet at the hotel on December 6. Exact time will be confirmed closer to departure.
Packing and Baggage Pack light—1 carry-on and 1 checked bag (max 45 lbs). Storage is limited, and you’ll want space for souvenirs. Use Apple AirTags to track your bags. Attach ID inside and outside your luggage.
Check the forecast a week before departure. Average temps: lows around 32°F, highs around 45°F. Pack warm, casual, and layered clothing: sweaters, long sleeves, jacket, thermals, gloves, wool hat, scarf, winter boots, swimsuit, sunglasses, and a day pack. The aquadome provides robes.
Check the “Packing 101” section in Heading Abroad with AFS for more tips. Remember, less is more—bring what you’ll actually use.
Electronics You only need an adapter plug (Type C, two-prong round). No converter is needed for phones or tablets. Double-check for forgotten charger cords before leaving each hotel. All properties have hairdryers. See https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com for details.
Money Matters Bring at least $300 cash for tips, meals, and shopping. Exchange currency at the airport, banks, or hotels, or use an ATM at reputable locations (avoid standalone ATMs due to skimmer scams). Bring new bills (from 2016 or later). Mastercard and Visa are accepted; Amex is not. Credit cards are safer than debit cards, and many have no foreign transaction fees.
Exchange rate: 1 Euro ≈ $0.95 USD. Create a conversion cheat sheet at https://www.oanda.com/currency/travel-exchange-rates.
Gratuities $90 will be added to your invoice for tipping local guides, drivers, and staff. If you receive exceptional service, feel free to tip more.
Communication Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and public places. Check with your carrier for international phone plans before you go. Use Wi-Fi for messaging (iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger). Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions unless you have a VPN. Without Wi-Fi, all data usage (including WhatsApp and Skype) will count against your roaming plan.
Shopping Christmas markets offer unique crafts, nutcrackers, beer steins, cuckoo clocks, jewelry, Swiss watches, chocolates, and more—great for holiday shopping.
Extending Your Trip You’re welcome to add extra days at the end of the tour. If you visit other countries, plan carefully—AFS is not responsible for independent travel arrangements.
Private Facebook Group Use the group page (link in your Wetravel welcome letter) to introduce yourself, connect with others, and share photos. All official updates will still be sent by email and posted in Trip Tips. Don’t rely solely on the Facebook group for essential information.
Emergency Contact
More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2 to 3 weeks before departure. Your guide can handle a call home for a true emergency. Do not expect to use your trip leader’s cell phone; you’ll need to use your own.

Travel Psychology 101 – Prepare for your departure joyfully with no contempt before investigation upon arrival. Please understand that with travel, things are not like at home and changes may occur. Great trips work best for those with an open mind, flexible attitude and adventuresome spirit. If changes occur, embrace them with serendipity. Who knows?… The unexpected may prove to be a better experience. Adapt and go with the flow with a laid-back attitude. Be spontaneous. Be tolerant of foreign cultures in respecting their centuries of traditions. Embrace the differences. Be curious, not shy. Smile – locals will sense your energy of kindness and kindness always begets kindness. Our common goal is to experience different cultures, make new friends, get great photos, have large fun, and return home safely with memories worthy of recollection.
